PrefGel™
Root Surface Conditioner/ EDTA 24%, Ph neutral

About PrefGel™

Mechanical debridement of root surfaces inevitably results in the formation of a smear layer that may negatively influence periodontal repair or regeneration. PrefGel™ is a pH neutral, root surface conditioning gel (24% EDTA in carboxy methyl cellulose gel) that promotes effective removal of the smear layer during periodontal surgery. It is intended for topical application onto exposed root surfaces. PrefGel offers effective, yet gentle removal of the smear layer without damaging the surrounding tissues.

A Companion To Emdogain®Gel Treatment

In treatment with Emdogain®Gel, eliminating the smear layer ensures that the enamel matrix proteins are allowed to interact with and precipitate onto a clean root surface. This vital interaction forms the foundation for the regain of loss periodontal tissues including new cementum, new periodontal ligament with inserting and functionally oriented collagen fibers and new alveolar bone.

Conditioning Versus Etching

Etching at low pHEtching with agents operating at low pH, such as citric acid or phosphoric acid, have been shown to remove the smear layer even after a relatively short application time. However, etching with acids can interfere with the periodontal healing, since there is a risk of a possible necrotizing effect of surrounding vital periodontal tissues. Also, it is known that low pH agents denature the collagenous matrix.
Conditioning at Neutral pHConditioning with PrefGel removes the smear layer and exposes the collagenous matrix of dentin and cementum by selective removal of mineral. It has also been shown that conditioning with PrefGel ™ does not interfere with the vitality of the surrounding periodontium, which is imperative for successful periodontal healing.

Directions For Use
Each package of PrefGel contains 10 sterilized, single-use pipettes.

1. The pipette is opened by twisting the wing. 2. Press out the contents into a sterile dappen dish and apply
the gel using a minigauze, a small sterile instrument (e.g. a plastic instrument) or a sterile syringe with a blunt ended cannula; alternatively withdraw the contents directly from the pipette into a syringe.
3. Remove any remaining plaque and/or calculus as well as blood from root surfaces exposed during
periodontal surgery.
4. Apply PrefGel™ onto exposed root surfaces for 2 minutes.
5. Rinse thoroughly with sterile saline.
6. Avoid recontamination of the conditioned root surfaces after the final rinse and prior to treatment
with e.g. EmdogainGel.
7. After application, discard any residual gel.
